    PSAT 8/9 and PreACT Reading/Writing - A Head Start

The PSAT 8/9 tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10—in a way that makes sense for eighth and ninth graders. It measures what they’re already learning, shows them whether they’re on track for college, and lets them know where they need the most improvement. That means students have time to tackle these areas long before they take the SAT.

The PSAT 8/9 helps students determine what they need to work on most so that they’re ready for college when they graduate from high school—and it supports educators as they guide the way.

    PSAT 8/9 Test Prep - Reading/Writing

Most of the middle schools or high schools ask 8th or 9th graders to take the PSAT 8/9 test in October, This class is for students going to 8th grade or 9th grade to prepare the PSAT 8/9 test. This is also a great class to help students to improve overall comprehensive reading and writing (English usage and grammar part) skills.  The class will help students become familiar with the test and learn the skills and tips for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.

This class is also good for PreACT reading/writing preparation. Here is the complete guide information for PSAT 8/9 from College Board: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/psat-8-9-student-guide.pdf

SAT Test Prep - Introduction to new Digital SAT tests

The aim of this class is to familiarize both parents and students with the new Digital SAT format. By gaining insights into students' performance on these tests, participants can devise effective study plans tailored to the requirements of the new Digital SAT format.

For the first 3-hour session, students will do a full set of digital SAT tests, supervised by Sunshine Elite teacher by zoom. The digital tests will be posted on the class page at beginning of the session. If you can't attend this session, you may still do it later by proctoring at home by your parents.

For the second 3-hour session, on March 31, The teacher will spend half hour 1-1:30 to introduce the new Digital SAT format and changes. and then review the tests and introduce the test tips for the new digital tests. For the first half hour, the parents are welcome to join the zoom session.

The digital SAT is 2 hours and 14 minutes (2 hours and 24 minutes with the break), and it has a total of 98 questions. The test consists of two sections: (1) Reading and Writing and (2) Math. The Reading and Writing section is 64 minutes with 54 questions, and the Math section is 70 minutes with 44 questions.

Each section is broken up into two modules of equal length. Each Reading and Writing module is 32 minutes long with 27 questions. Each Math module is 35 minutes long with 22 questions.

There is a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. However, there is not a break between the two modules within each section.

Below are the main difference that Digital SAT tests than the regular SAT tests:

    • The test is computer adaptive, meaning it adjusts its difficulty based on your performance. How you do in the first module of each section determines the level of difficulty of the questions you see in the second module.
    • The digital SAT is 46 minutes shorter than the paper SAT, and has 56 fewer questions
    • The Reading and Writing sections are combined, and have shorter passages, helping to reduce the number of questions
    • More time is allotted to complete each question
    • You’ll be able to use a calculator for all the math questions…right on your screen!

While the digital SAT may seem slightly easier, students will still need to study and prep properly beforehand. Let this be a confidence booster for you and help give you some study motivation!
