Sunshine is seeking enthusiastic 8th graders and high school students to join us as volunteer teacher assistants for our Sunshine Elite summer camps or afterschool program. We offer flexible volunteer hours, allowing you to choose slots that fit your schedule once your application is approved.
To volunteer at Sunshine, you must meet the following requirements:
1. Be a 8th grader or high school student with a GPA of 3.8 or above.
2. Commit to volunteering for at least 15 hours during the summer or once a week during the school terms.

1. Begin by registering for the "Sunshine Volunteer Signup" on the Sunshine website. Upon signing up, you will gain access to the course "Sunshine Volunteer Application" within your Sunshine account.
2. Proceed to complete your application by following the instructions on the "Class Page" assignment labeled "Submit Application Material". This entails submitting your most recent school transcript along with an essay about yourself covering the specified topics.

Robotics is a great way to inspire students to learn about math, science, and technology!
This Robotics Camp for K-2nd graders introduces the world's coolest robotics program as listed in Robots from National Geographic KIDS.
Students will be instructed in the basics of robotics before experimenting themselves with the amazing LEGO Creators, LEGO Boost Educational Robots and the new Spike Essential Toolkits. Through hands-on learning, students will have lots of fun and gain exceptional knowledge about design, construction, mechanics, and programming.

This camp is all about building confidence. Your child will learn to confidently discuss opinions and describe the world around them. Participants will get a head start speaking in front of others. We will introuduce the basic speech skills such as eye contacts or voice etc and practice those skills in the camp via different topics.

Astronomy Science Camp for Grade K-2

Our Solar and Earth Science Camp combines knowledge, creative thinking, research projects, and introduces newly advanced technology in space science.
We would like students to know the only limitation in science is your own imagination.We will discuss and work on the following topics:

This is a SUMMA Package for rising 3rd graders in Elementary school who would like to prepare for the SUMMA CogAt tests. The tests can be selected to take in the coming Fall semester. Scoring 99 percentile in CogAt test will qualify for SUMMA in middle school. Or scoring one 99 percentile in ITBS Math or Reading, plus one 97 percentile in another ITBS test or CogAt test will qualify for SUMMA too.
This camp will teach the skills for all 9 sections in CogAt tests and do practice and mock tests. Summer CogAt test preparation are designed to finish by 3 weeks of half-day camps. In the frist 2 weeks, we will work through 9 sections of CogAt: Verbal Analogy, Verbal Classification, Verbal Sentence Completion, Number Analogy, Number Puzzles, Number Series, Figure Analogy, Figure Classification, and Paper Folding. Creative Writing: Making Stories Together for 3rd-5th Grade
Make stories using all of your senses. This writing workshop emphasizes children's ideas. They will build, sketch, and cut and paste their ideas using unconventional creative materials; then find the words and writing conventions that support what they really want to say. Children will learn new techniques for getting inspired and bringing their ideas to paper. PreAlgebra Camp for Rising Grade 6-7
This Summer Camp is for students who want to learn PreAlgebra or refine their PreAlgebra skills so that they are ready to learn Algebra 1.
Each Lesson gives several examples and explanation of the math topic, and have 10-20 practice questions as assignments. Students will be able to complete the PreAlgebra in 6-week of half day PreAlgebra camps.

This is the SSAT/HSPT Vocabulary/Reading/Writing test prep camp for Middle school students preparing Private High school entry tests. The class will cover information about the format of the SSAT/HSPT, its timing, scoring, and content, We will learn through the test skills and tips by practice tests for each section.
We will use some printed materials for Vocabulary, Reading and Writing skills, and we will also use online tests for practice and mock the real tests. All materials will be provided in the camp. We will have Ipads in the camp for students doing the online tests.The SSAT score is required by OES, Catlin Cable high school application or it can be used to qualify the talented search program such as Johns Hopkins for talented youth https://cty.jhu.edu/. SSAT tests usually are hosted by some local schools like OES, Catlin Cable. The tests are usually offered in December, January, and February.
The HSPT test is similar to the SSAT test, which is used by the Christian High schools like Jesuit, St. Mary, or Valley Catholic. HSPT test is usually offered in January by the private school like Jesuit.

This camp will primarily focus on Algebra and Geometry, along with problem-solving techniques.
MathCounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person "bee" style contests. Some students love math. Other students fear math. MATHCOUNTS is the place for both. It provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving.
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. The contest is held in November every year and for students in grades 8 and below.
We designed 2-week of summer camps for students to learn the common problem-solving strategies for both competitions and also working on the previous years of tests for practice. The 2 camps will focus on different topics and use different practice materials. It's best that students can join both camps, but it's also ok to join one of them.Prerequisites: Students have at least completed PreAlgebra; It's better if students have completed or learning Algebra I and Geometry.

Often known as a game for the intellectually gifted, chess is the best sport to exercise the most important organ in our bodies: the brain. It promotes brain growth; raises your IQ; teaches planning and foresight; sparks your creativity; increases problem-solving skills and optimizes memory improvement
This camp will teach more about basic opening strategies and more advanced tactical tricks and patterns.
The class is going to cover STRATEGY - the long-term structural considerations that reveal the depth and inner logic of chess! Students will learn about harder and more complicated checkmate patterns too.In this camp, we will run USCF-rated Chess Quads on Friday, the last day of the camp.

The camp involves incorporating activities that are engaging, age-appropriate, and focused on building foundational writing skills.
Here are a few example strategies we employ at our camp to actively involve children in writing:
- Use Fun Prompts: Provide interesting prompts that stimulate imagination and creativity. For example, "If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to..." or "My favorite animal is..."
- Start Small: Begin with simple writing tasks such as writing a sentence from simple to descriptive or a short paragrap. Gradually increase the complexity as they become more confident.
- Provide Positive Feedback: Encourage children's efforts and celebrate their progress. Offer specific praise for their ideas, efforts, and improvements in writing.
- Make it Fun: Turn writing into a game by playing writing-related activities like word bingo, storytelling games, or writing scavenger hunts.
- Read Aloud: Read stories and books aloud to children to expose them to different writing styles, vocabulary, and sentence structures. This can inspire their own writing.
- Offer Choices: Allow children to choose their writing topics or formats. Giving them autonomy increases motivation and engagement.

Our life science camp adopts New Jersey standard for elementary science education plus unique Sunshine Elite style to foster creative thinking throughout hand-on experiences and research topics.
We will discuss and work on the following topics:
Life Cycle, Ecosystem
Understanding of the life-cycles of various creatures and plants in order to understand the world around us and to connect ourselves with nature
Understanding of the interdependence of living organisms in their environment
(1) Understanding of the impact of human activities on the environment
(2) Plant genetics and field trips to Natural Park/Greenhouse(3) Research Topic: How animals, such as Monkey, Elephant, mice communicate?
(4) Human Body Systems - various organs, systems and their fuctions in human body

The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. The contest is held in November every year and for students in grades 8 and below.
We designed 2-week of summer camps for students to learn the common problem-solving strategies for both competitions and also working on the previous years of tests for practice. The Math Olympiad camp/class will stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics. It will teach major strategies for problem-solving and develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems. The goal is to strengthen the problem-solving skills of all students.
Math League expands on basic math concepts taught in schools by using more challenging questions and word problems, requiring students to use critical thinking to complete each question accurately and in a timely manner. All questions must be finished in the allotted time, and due to this constraint, the course is focused on practical strategies to quickly and accurately answer these types of questions.
Math Kangaroo is a great way to introduce elementary school students to the world of competitive math. An interactive competition complete with prizes, the test is not based on knowledge but is rather replete with puzzle and logic-type problems. Math Kangaroo is open to students in grades 1 - 12, the competition offers 24 problems to be solved within 75 minutes for grades 1-5 and 30 questions for students in grades 5 and up.

This is the CogAt fundamental training camp for Kindergarten-2nd grade. The camp will build up the fundation and skills for students to take the TAG test in the next school year.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice test designed to measure a child's academic aptitude. It is used to measure cognitive development among children and is often used to identify gifted children for admissions into gifted and talented programs across the United States.
The goal of this camp is to have the young students familiarize with the test format. But a more important goal to set up this camp is to improve the cognitive and reasoning abilities by learning the logical and creative thinking behind the materials. The verbal skills and some figure cognitive skills in the CogAt test may take more time to build up, which are the common weak areas for most students.

The art camp is aimed to foster young student's general appropriation toward arts and to learn basic skills for their artistic expressions such as painting and sketching.
This camp will teach students observing the real world in fine drawing and quick sketches from life. The camp will introduce basic concepts of shapes and forms, volume, textures, values of shades basic design, 1-3 Prospective, basic color theory, and many more. Trying to complete a piece of work in each day. Further their interests and knowledge in art making.
The camp will also introduce students the history of Art - Students will learn the different styles of famous artists while learning basic art history.

PreAlgebra Camp for Rising Grade 6-7
This Summer Camp is for students who want to learn PreAlgebra or refine their PreAlgebra skills so that they are ready to learn Algebra 1.
Each Lesson gives several examples and explanation of the math topic, and have 10-20 practice questions as assignments. Students will be able to complete the PreAlgebra in 6-week of half day PreAlgebra camps.

It is reading between lines in order to discover levels of meaning and develop complex interpretations.
In this class, students will:
(1) Review Basic Reading (imagining, responding, skimming)
(2) Learn Reflective Reading (selecting, scanning, tracking)
(3) Learn Analytical Reading (Interpreting, analyzing)
(4) Write a critical analysis style essay
(5) Build up vocabulary throughout reading
(6) Form up their unique critical essay writing style with correct logical structure and grammar.
In this one week camp, the instructor will lead students to read at least one book, plus shorter pieces or chapters from books in a variety of genres.For essay writing, the first step of critical writing is to take notes on evidence, document quotes and paraphrases while reading. The purpose of critical analysis is not merely to inform, but also to evaluate the worth, utility, excellence, distinction, truth, validity, beauty, or goodness of something from the books that students are reading. We will instruct students to write those notes down on a notebook.
The second step of critical writing is to design a clear logical structure of an essay. Students need to design/plan their essay with clear logical flow before start writing critical essay.
During the revising process, we will check the logical structure, information, interpretation, evaluation of the text, and eliminate grammar errors.

Launched in 1991, the National Science Bowl (NSB) is a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of high school and middle school students. The winner of the academic portion of the Regional Science Bowl wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC to compete in the National Science Bowl.

The PSAT 8/9 tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10—in a way that makes sense for eighth and ninth graders. That means students have time to tackle these areas long before they take the SAT.

Most of the middle schools in Beaverton School district started to ask 8th-grade students to take the PSAT 8/9 test in October two years ago, and the 9th graders in Lake Oswego District will take the PSAT 8/9 test in October too. This camp is for students going to 8th grade or 9th grade to prepare the PSAT 8/9 test in October 2019. This camp will primarily focus on Algebra and Geometry concepts and problem-solving techniques.
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are nationwide tests administered by the Mathematical Association of America that qualify you for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Only those with top scores will be invited to take the AIME. The MAA recommends 9th and 10th graders take the AMC 10, and 11th and 12th graders take the AMC 12. You can take the AMC 10 and/or 12 multiple times.
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 each have 25 questions. You have 75 minutes for the entire exam. Note that you don't need to get all of the questions right to get a qualifying score. You just have to do better than most of the other students taking the exam! Keep that in mind as you come up with a strategy for the test.
You need to be in the top 5% of scorers on the AMC 12 or the top 2.5% of scorers on the AMC 10 to qualify, so the vast majority of people who take the AMC exams don't qualify. But, if you do qualify, you can take the American Invitation Mathematics Examination, or AIME.
If you do well on the AIME, you can qualify for the US Mathematical Olympiad. The top scorers from that competition then have the opportunity to train to be on the US team that competes at the International Math Olympiad. It's a long process to get to the IMO, and very few students make it that far. But even just taking the AIME can set you apart in the college admissions process, especially if you are interested in engineering programs. Along with a high GPA and strong SAT/ACT scores, taking the AIME is a way to signal to colleges you have superior math and problem-solving skills.
This course will help students to be more ready for do well on AMC 10/12 tests. We will use customized materials for different topics in the competition and also use many previously AMC 10/12 questions both in class and for homework.

This is the CogAt fundamental training camp for Kindergarten-2nd grade. The camp will build up the fundation and skills for students to take the TAG test in the next school year.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice test designed to measure a child's academic aptitude. It is used to measure cognitive development among children and is often used to identify gifted children for admissions into gifted and talented programs across the United States.
The goal of this camp is to have the young students familiarize with the test format. But a more important goal to set up this camp is to improve the cognitive and reasoning abilities by learning the logical and creative thinking behind the materials. The verbal skills and some figure cognitive skills in the CogAt test may take more time to build up, which are the common weak areas for most students.

Students will be instructed in the basics of robotics before experimenting themselves with the amazing LEGO EV3 Robotic Toolkits. Through hands-on learning, Students will have lots of fun and gain exceptional knowledge about design, construction, mechanics, and programming.
We are using LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 Comprehensive Solution in this classroom.
