07/11 to 08/17 12 Classes Tuesday,Thursday 11:00am-12:00pm $255/term In-person onlyLocation: 15320 NW Central Dr. Ste D6 Room 2
This course focuses on building writing skills and grammar systematically for students in Kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2. This level has a special focus on writing sentences.
Most of the skills are drawn from the higher level of the grade spread, therefore this class is most appropriate for advanced Kindergarten students and on-level grade 1 & 2 students. Each of our levels has two years worth of skill content. A student can take this level for two years without repeating content!
Our "skill-based" program helps children focus on specific writing skills in each class, so students gain mastery skill by skill. They become confident, competent writers. Each term we practice many genres of writing. Each genre builds different skills such as building attention to word choice with poetry and attention to descriptive details with science writing.
Meanwhile "guided" writing is highly supported, and enables students to produce complete writing that is well-structured.
An example guided writing assignment could provide the following prompts: 1. What was the best thing that happened over winter vacation? 2. Who was there? 3. Where was it? 4. When did it happen? 5. What happened first? 6. What happened next? 7. What happened last? 8. Complete the sentence: It was the best because ___________.
A child who follows these prompts easily learns the importance of answering the questions who, when, and where, as well as including a sequence of events and a closing that relates to the main idea. When they draft their paragraph on a new piece of paper, they have a complex and complete paragraph.

We will be building writing skills and grammar systematically for students in grades 2 and 3. Most of the skills are drawn from the higher level of the grade spread, therefore this class is most appropriate for advanced grade 2 students and on-level grade 3 students. Each of our levels has two years worth of skill content. A student can take this level for two years without repeating content! When your student is ready to happily and confidently write multiple, related paragraphs, they will move on to Level 3.
For example, in Level 2, instead of asking a child to write a paragraph describing a place, a guided writing assignment could provide the following prompts: 1. Imagine you are there. What do you see? 2. What do you hear? 3. What do you smell? 4. What could you eat? 5. What kind of textures could you feel? 6. What kind of mood are the people in? 7. What are most of the people doing?
A child who follows these prompts learns to include 5 senses in their descriptions as well as emotions and activities.
